Responsibilities – TBM Geologist

• Overall detailed site investigation understanding the geological factors that may impact tunnel construction and developing an appropriate tunnel design and construction plan.
• Collecting data on the geologic and geotechnical characteristics of the site, such as rock type, strength, and stability, groundwater conditions, and the presence of any faults or other geologic features that could impact the design and construction of the tunnel.
• Extensive field investigation and providing good quality descriptions such as faults, joints, bedding planes, and folds can significantly affect tunnel design, excavation method, and support requirements.
• Predict the behavior of a tunnel more accurately.
• Provide detailed Method Statement of excavation, and remediation of possible unforeseen ground conditions ahead the face and the assessment of the risk of the possible altered ground conditions.
• Before tunnelling ensure that all systems are operational including all temporary and permanent ground support systems.
• Tunnel face mapping by entering TBM cutter head chamber.
• Soil investigation test and rock quality testing.
• Rock Mass Classification Conducting Dynamic Probing Test and grouting works on surface and maintain reports.
• Preparing daily tunnel progress reports. Prediction of tunnel induced settlements

Requirements :

• Degree or Diploma in Geology, Engineering Geology, or Geotechnical Engineering.
• Additional certifications in tunnel or rock mechanics (preferred).
• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in tunnel boring machine (TBM) projects.
• Proven experience in geological mapping, face logging, and ground behavior assessment during TBM operations.
• Ability to interpret geological and geotechnical data for TBM advancement.
• Understanding of soil/rock classification systems, ground conditioning, and excavation parameters.
• Knowledge of instrumentation and monitoring systems in tunneling environments.
• Willingness to work on-site in shifts, often in confined underground conditions.
• Ability to monitor TBM performance and provide immediate geological support during excavation.
• Strong report writing and documentation skills.
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team with engineers, TBM operators, and construction managers.
• English proficiency (spoken and written); other languages may be an asset depending on project location.
