WakeZ is on the mission to disrupt depression. For centuries and way before, depression has

crippled humanity in ways impossible to comprehend. From mental unease to depriving people of

the very sense of what makes us human, the impact is unimaginable.

About the challenge

A significant component of WakeZ, perhaps the core component, is the ability to analyze sleep

patterns at scale. We’re using this to detect depression and solve it.

This means our team has to work on the following challenges, day in and day out:

• Working with our medical research team to collect data, in our sleep lab, using polysomnography devices. Defining standards of data collection, creating systems for dataset creation, validating data, and assisting our team with core data practices.

• Leveraging our on-device (Apple Watch) technology to collect sensor data (movement, heart rate, breathing rate, temperature, etc.)

• Build pre-training and training datasets for our sleep foundation models.

• Research and create state-of-the-art AI/ML architectures that solve problems such as sleep stage classification and sleep anomaly detection.

About your skills

This is a highly autonomous job. We are hiring for agency and for your ability to reason through

problems that were not solved before. At least not at the scale of millions that we are planning to

serve. However, we are still looking at a set of core technical skills such as:

• Core experience with Numpy, Polars, Pandas, and other data manipulation frameworks.

• Core experience with ML frameworks such as PyTorch and scikit-learn.

• You live and breathe Python and PEP8; although we do experimental work, we like our work to be clean and great coding and documentation practices will cut through the noise.

• You’re an experienced user of coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or Windsurf.

• You’re familiar with web/API frameworks such as Flask, FastAPI, or Django

• Any MLOps / Cloud-based AI training & inference experience is a big plus (AWS).

• Academic research experience is a significant value add.

Technical and hard skills aside, we’re still human and look for other creative humans to up-skill

our team. If you feel you have more to offer, we’d love to hear about that!

About the process

So you’ve checked the boxes above and you think the WakeZ AI Lab can be the place you’d add

your contribution to. This is what you can expect as next step:

1. A quick, 15-20 min, screening phone call with someone on our technical team. Be ready to just share a few things you’re great at, why you think your experience would be a differentiator in the team. We’ll ask about the most difficult thing you’ve ever done.
2. A technical challenge. After your screening call, you’ll receive a technical challenge to solve. We’ll share a dataset with you and we’ll ask you to implement a model that works on time series data. You’ll have to submit the code and a document explaining your reasoning, the solution, and the results. Academical-level, or paper-like submission will be appreciated.
3. A 25 minute video call lead by you! You present the challenge submission to 1-2 of our colleagues. This is where we would love to see you shine. Tell us about your approach: the positives, the negatives, what you would like to do next, and what would you have done differently.
