Description
Higher Ground Neighborhood Development Corp. is looking for interns to participate in Its teacher preparation project focused on increasing Oakland’s quality and quantity of excellent educators who want to learn the practice of early childhood youth development.
We are looking for vibrant youth developers with creative minds ready to learn how to introduce balanced literacy, Si Swun math facts, environmental science, technology, engineering, and service-learning concepts (STEMS) to early learners of Color in a structured comprehensive after-school setting. Higher Ground teaching interns will learn the soft skills that make an excellent Urban Educator through teaching project-based STEMS lessons in one of our four comprehensive after-school programs along with the hard skills of lesson plan implementation and effective classroom management/modifications.
This paid internship focuses on youth voice, engagement, interaction, standards-based project-driven teaching strategies, inquiry-based learning, lesson plan prep and analysis, data collection in, environmental education, and behavior modification focused on restorative practices. This two-year project will prepare interns for the rigors of the urban classroom by going deep into the practice and point-of-service standards for good teaching. Hands-on learning, on-the-job training, and a schedule that is conducive to college coursework and some teaching credential programs are added features for this paid internship.
Starting range of pay is $10.00 to $14.00 dollars per hour depending on experience, 6.5 hours per week, Mon-Fri and some Sat. Daily report times are 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm with Wed. or Fri. report times of 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm for minimum day schedule. All interns must complete all cycles of training, coaching, and appraisal as part of successful internship completion. A certificate of completion, training hours, letters of recommendation, and topics you are proficient in will be provided for your next youth development journey.
All interns must enter with 48 units of post-secondary education, pass the Alameda County Instructional Assistants examination, have a bachelor’s degree, and be self-motivated with a desire to impact the lives of children and families in Oakland through teaching. This is a twenty-month non-benefited internship contract period with unpaid summers and school holidays.English/Spanish bilingual individuals are highly encouraged to apply.
