Marine Interior Design Engineer
- Job Summary
The Interior Engineer is responsible for developing technical drawings, construction details, and installation documentation for ship interior spaces. This role ensures that interior outfitting components—such as wall panels, ceilings, furniture, floors, wet units, doors and other systems—are engineered to meet marine safety standards, production requirements, and owner expectations. The Interior Engineer acts as the technical bridge between interior designers, shipyards naval architects, and production teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technical Engineering & Detailing
- Prepare 2D production drawings in AutoCAD for insulation, walls, ceilings, door layouts, furniture, wet units, and other interior systems.
- Convert interior design concepts into detailed engineering documents ready for production and installation.
- Calculating weights, providing summary of center of gravity.
2. Integration & Coordination
- Identify and resolve spatial clashes in provide clarification for shipyards.
- Coordinate with structural, HVAC, electrical, piping, and outfitting teams to ensure proper integration of interior systems.
- Communicate and acquire details, specifications form suppliers.
3. Compliance & Standards
- Select marine-approved materials and verify compliance with fire and class standards.
4. Production & Installation Support
- Provide technical support to shipyard teams during outfitting and installation phases.
- Review other party drawings, installation manuals, specification lists.
5. Documentation & Reporting
- Create 2D drawings for insulation, walls, ceilings, doors layout, furniture.
- Create and maintain materials take outs.
- Ensure documentation revision control.
- Prepare technical reports or installation guidelines when necessary.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in interior outfitting engineering for ships (cruise, yacht, navy, offshore, ferries).
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and experience with 3D modelling software (Rhino, SketchUp etc.).
- Strong problem-solving skills, communication in English, both written and verbal.
- Degree in Naval Engineering, Civil or Mechanical Engineering, Interior Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Architecture, or similar field.
- Knowledge of shipbuilding materials, fire-class systems, sound/noise mitigation, and marine carpentry.
Preferred expertise
- Experience working in a shipyard or with carpentry subcontractors.
- Familiarity turnkey interior concepts.
