Project Overview

We are looking for an experienced Python Fullstack Developer with a strong backend focus to support the technical assessment, stabilization, integration and further development of an existing application in an enterprise banking environment.

The application is currently available as a containerized proof of concept and includes a Python-based backend, REST APIs, integrations with external data sources, data extraction and aggregation components, ontology-based configurations and a lightweight JavaScript frontend.

The main objective of the assignment is to prepare the application for sustainable integration and operation within the target environment. This includes reviewing the existing architecture, improving test coverage, identifying technical pain points and strengthening maintainability, security, monitoring and operational readiness.

The application is also part of a broader initiative focused on ontology-based knowledge management within the banking domain. Initial business use cases include mortgage lending value assessment and online banking. The transferability of the underlying concepts to insolvency and receivables management will also be evaluated.

Responsibilities

• Analyze the existing Python application, modules and overall codebase
• Identify technical risks, architectural weaknesses, operational gaps and maintainability issues
• Conduct a structured code analysis and derive concrete improvement measures
• Review the application architecture and validate interfaces between internal components and external systems
• Support the integration of the application into the target enterprise environment
• Further develop, stabilize and maintain Python-based backend services
• Develop and maintain REST API endpoints
• Create, improve and maintain automated unit and integration tests
• Increase test coverage for critical Python modules and external integrations
• Review and improve error handling, resilience and fallback mechanisms
• Analyze and optimize integrations with external APIs, web portals and geodata services
• Maintain and improve data extraction, aggregation and harmonization components
• Review existing web scraping components and improve their robustness and maintainability
• Improve code quality, modularity, technical documentation and long-term maintainability
• Implement or enhance authentication, authorization and login mechanisms where required
• Implement or extend logging, monitoring, health checks and operational diagnostics
• Support Docker-based packaging, deployment and runtime configuration
• Review the application’s production readiness and operational requirements
• Maintain or further develop the lightweight JavaScript frontend where necessary
• Support ontology- and mapping-based application configurations
• Collaborate closely with architects, platform teams and business stakeholders
• Document technical findings, implementation decisions and recommendations

Must-have Skills

• Strong professional experience with Python
• Experience developing and maintaining backend applications and REST APIs
• Hands-on experience with FastAPI or a comparable Python web framework
• Strong experience with automated testing in Python, particularly unit testing
• Experience with testing frameworks such as pytest
• Experience analyzing, stabilizing and improving existing codebases
• Good understanding of software architecture, modular design and interface concepts
• Hands-on experience with Docker and containerized applications
• Experience integrating external APIs and third-party services
• Good understanding of HTTP communication, error handling and resilience patterns
• Experience with logging, monitoring and application troubleshooting
• Understanding of authentication and authorization concepts
• Ability to identify technical pain points and derive pragmatic solutions
• Basic frontend development experience with JavaScript
• Ability to work independently and prioritize effectively within a 0.5 FTE assignment
• Good German communication skills

Nice-to-have Skills

• Experience with Gunicorn or comparable Python application servers
• Experience with web scraping and libraries such as BeautifulSoup
• Experience with geocoding, geodata APIs or location-based services
• Experience implementing caching and fallback mechanisms
• Familiarity with stateless service architectures
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated quality checks
• Experience deploying containerized applications in cloud or enterprise environments
• Familiarity with RDF, Turtle/TTL, ontologies, semantic technologies or knowledge graphs

• Previous experience in banking, financial services or another regulated environment
