The Quality Manager is a critical role responsible for ensuring the quality of products, processes, and systems throughout the product lifecycle, from design and development through production and customer service. They play a key role in implementing and maintaining quality standards, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and resolving complex quality issues to meet the stringent requirements of the automotive industry and its customers.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development and implementation of quality plans for new and existing products and processes, adhering to automotive industry standards (e.g., IATF 16949, APQP, PPAP, CSR’s).
- Collaborate with design, engineering, and manufacturing teams to ensure quality is built into the product from the initial stages.
- Develop and review Process Flow Diagrams, Control Plans, and Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA).
- Define and specify inspection and testing requirements, ensuring we meet customer print.
- Evaluate and approve potential suppliers based on their quality systems and capabilities.
- Conduct supplier audits to assess compliance with quality standards and requirements.
- Monitor supplier performance and provide feedback for improvement.
- Work with suppliers to resolve quality issues and implement corrective actions (8D methodology).
- Manage the PPAP process for supplied components.
- Monitor manufacturing processes to ensure compliance with established quality standards and procedures. Validating process in inline with Control Plan
- Conduct in-process and final product inspections and testing. (PLA, Safety launch, etc.)
- Investigate root causes of quality issues identified in manufacturing and implement corrective and preventive actions with Validation. (CAPA).
- Utilize statistical process control (SPC) and other quality tools to monitor process stability and identify potential problems.
- Support the implementation of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives on the production floor.
- Lead and participate in cross-functional teams to investigate and resolve complex quality issues using structured problem-solving methodologies (e.g., 8D, Fishbone diagrams, 5 Whys).
- Drive continuous improvement activities to enhance product quality, reduce defects, and improve process efficiency.
- Analyze quality data and trends to identify areas for improvement.
- Implement and monitor the effectiveness of corrective and preventive actions.
- Act as a key point of contact for customer quality concerns and inquiries.
- Investigate and respond to customer complaints and warranty claims.
- Analyze field return data and identify root causes of failures.
- Implement actions to prevent the recurrence of field quality issues.
- Participate in customer audits and assessments.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of the Quality Management System (QMS) in accordance with IATF 16949 and other relevant standards.
- Participate in internal and external audits of the QMS.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of quality procedures and work instructions.
- Provide training and guidance to junior quality engineers and other team members on quality tools, techniques, and standards.
- Share knowledge and best practices within the organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering – Mechanical/Automobile.
- Proven experience (5+ years) as a Quality Manager in the automotive industry.
- Strong understanding of automotive quality standards (e.g., IATF 16949, APQP, PPAP, FMEA, SPC, MSA).
- Experience with structured problem-solving methodologies (e.g., 8D, Fishbone, 5 Whys).
- Proficiency in using quality tools and techniques (e.g., statistical analysis, control charts, capability studies).
- Experience with conducting internal and supplier audits.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles is a plus.
- Certification in quality (e.g., ASQ Certified Quality Engineer - CQE) is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in relevant software (e.g., Minitab, statistical software, ERP systems).
- Experience building quality documents such as PFMEA, Control Plan, Flow Chart, etc.
